Michael John Hind Hodgson was born 25 April 1941 in St Andrews, Scotland. He was one of four children for Samuel and Maisie Hodgson.

The family migrated to Tasmania, Australia in 1947, and the young Hodgson attended Moonah State School and Princes Street State School for his primary education. In 1954 he attended Hobart Technical High School for his secondary education, and was awarded a Commonwealth scholarship for tertiary studies. Hodgson relocated to Brisbane to study medicine at the University of Queensland, graduating MB BS in 1965.

Following university, Hodgson remained in Brisbane to complete a year as a Resident Medical Officer at the Royal Brisbane Hospital. He then relocated again to Cairns to complete his second year as a Resident Medical Officer at Cairns Base Hospital. In 1967, he returned to Tasmania where he took up the position of Anaesthetic Registrar at the Royal Hobart Hospital, staying in that position for three years. Hodgson relocated again in 1970, to work as an Anaesthetic Registrar at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary in Scotland. While working in Scotland, Hodgson also gained his FFARCS (Fellow of the Faculty of Anaesthetists, Royal College of Anaesthetists).

Returning to Australia, Hodgson once again called Tasmania home, taking up the position of Staff Anaesthetist at the Royal Hobart Hospital where, in 1972, he was appointed Director of Anaesthetics. He had also sat and passed the FFARACS (Fellow of the Faculty of Anaesthetists, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons) which was awarded in 1971.

He simultaneously worked as a Visiting Specialist Anaesthetist at the Repatriation General Hospital in Hobart, until 1986, and took up the position of Visiting Specialist Anaesthetist at the Royal Hobart Hospital in 1976. His privileges extended to Calvary Hospital, St John’s Hospital and St Helen’s Hospital.

In 1971, Hodgson also became a member of the Tasmanian Regional Committee, holding a number of positions with the Committee, including Honorary Secretary (1972 – 1975), Education Officer (1972 – 1979) and Chair (1975 – 1980). He was also Supervisor, Anaesthetic Training at the Royal Hobart Hospital (1972 – 1976), and sat on the Board of the Faculty as Tasmanian Observer (1975 – 1981). In 1981 he was elected to the Board, where he once again took on a number of roles, including Member and Assessor of the Education Committee (1984 – 1988), and Member of the Executive Committee (1981 – 1982 and 1984 – 1992).

The conception and planning for the separation of the Faculty of Anaesthetists from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, had been underway for a number of years. In 1992, the separation became official and the Faculty’s Board, including Hodgson, had the unique distinction of becoming the inaugural Council of the newly formed Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. That same year, Hodgson was elected as the second ANZCA President and was continuing in that role as ANZCA physically relocated from the RACS building in Melbourne’s Spring Street, to the new headquarters at 630 St Kilda Road, Melbourne.

Dr Michael John Hind Hodgson is now retired and continues to live in Tasmania.
