Joseph Ruskin Cornish was born in Adelaide in 1899. He graduated from the University of Adelaide with his MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgeon) degree in 1923. In 1926 he was awarded with a Fellowship to the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. He worked in in Adelaide until World War II. During the War he served in the South-West Pacific theatre. On his return to Australia, he re-commenced practicing at Adelaide Hospital solely in anaesthetics. From 1950, Cornish served as chair on the South Australian Committee of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists. After accepting his nomination to Fellowship in 1951, he died before the honour could be formally conferred in 1952.
