Stuart Vance Marshall was born on March 30, 1900 in Turramurra, New South Wales. He attended Wahroonga College and Public School in Cattal before serving in World War I. On his return to Australia he enrolled in a MB ChB (Bachelor of Medicine, Masters of Surgery) at the University of Sydney. He graduated in 1925. In 1936 he received his Diploma of Anaesthetics from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in London. Marshall was closely affiliated to the Royal prince Alfred Hospital and Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney. He served in both World War I and II. Outside of professional appointments, Marshall was a member of the Australian Society of Anaesthetists from 1936 and was President in 1951 and 1952. With the emergence of the Faculty of Anaesthetists in Australia, he was nominated a Founding Fellow in 1952.
