William Townsend Hotten was born on August 24, 1899 in Sydney. He received his MB ChM (Bachelor of Medicine, Masters of Surgery) from the University of Sydney in 1923. Around 1927, Hotten entered into general practice in Strathfield, Sydney and eventually gained the skills and credibility necessary for an appointment as honorary anaesthetist at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in 1930. As well as his hospital appointments, Hotten was a lecturer at the University of Sydney from 1934 alongside Senior Honorary Anaesthetist at the Royal Alfred. He retired in 1959. He was affiliated closely with the Australian Society of Anaesthetists (one of the founding members) and the Faculty of Anaesthetists, Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (founding Fellow in 1952). He is remembered for his practice and his teachings.
