William Moncrief Crosby was born in Hobart, Tasmania on 10 December 1928. Following the completion of his formal school and first year of university, Crosby relocated to the University of Melbourne as there was no medical school in Tasmania. He was an examiner for the Faculty of Anaesthetists at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons for 14 years, a tutor in physiology at Monash University for over 30 years and was elected Dean of the Faculty in 1982.

William Moncrief Crosby was born in Hobart, Tasmania on 10 December 1928. Upon completion of his formal schooling, Crosby moved to Melbourne to study medicine. There was no medical school in Tasmania until 1965 when it was introduced at the University of Tasmania.
Crosby graduated MB BS from the University of Melbourne in 1954 and almost immediately began work as a Junior Resident Medical Officer at the Alfred Hospital.
He was appointed as a staff anaesthetist there in 1959. The following year he achieved Fellowship with the Faculty of Anaesthetists of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, the predecessor of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, and in 1985 was appointed Deputy Director of Anaesthesia. He was the examiner for the Faculty from 1966 and spent 14 years in the role. He also tutored in physiology at Monash for over 30 years.
