Neville James Davis was born on [day, month, year] at [location]. He completed primary school at [school name] in [year], and then attended [school name] for secondary schooling. In [year], he started studying medicine at the University of Western Australia, graduating MB BS in 1964.

Immediately following graduation, Davis became a Resident Medical Officer at the Fremantle Hospital and, in 1965, became a Rotating Registrar. Two years later, in 1967, he relocated to the other side of the world and become the Senior House Officer, Anaesthetics, at Middlesex Hospital, London.

From London, Davis secured a six month appointment as Senior Registrar, R.K. Universiteit Nijmegen, in the Netherlands, followed by a three year term as Instructor in Anesthesia, and Clinical Fellow in Anesthesia, at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital.

In 1973, he returned to Western Australia, with a position as Staff Anaesthetist, Deputy Head, in the Department of Anaesthesia at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and Queen Elizabeth II Medical Centre in Nedlands. In 1977 he was appointed the head of the department (1977 – 1987). This tenure included a three month term as Visiting Professor at the Pennsylvania State University Medical School in the United States during 1984.

While building his clinical career, Davis also became directly involved with the Faculty of Anaesthetists, becoming a member of the Panel of Examiners in 1977, a position he held for 12 years, including Deputy Chair from 1988 to 1989.

In 1984, he was elected as a member of the Board of the Faculty, taking on a number of roles during that time, including General Examinations Committee Chair (1986 – 1989), Assistant Assessor (1988 – 1989), Assessor (1989 – 1993), and Hospital Accreditation Committee Chair (1989 – 1993). Davis was a member of Board of the Faculty in 1992, placing him in the position of being a member of the last Board of the Faculty and the first Council of the newly formed Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (the College). Davis remained on Council during the relocation to the new headquarters in 1993, at which time he was elected Vice President.

During his time on Council, Davis was also a member of the Joint Consultative Committee on Anaesthesia for Rural Practitioners, acting as Chair from 1990 to [year], and a member of the National Health and Medical Research Council Working Party on Anaesthesia Mortality. In 1992, he also took on the position of Clinical Associate Professor, University of Western Australia (1992 – [year]).

In 1995, Davis was elected College President.
